I’m not exactly sure where to start when it comes to El Chigre! But if I had to, I would like to start by saying it’s truly a hidden gem in Santo Domingo! Nestled away in the colonial zone, this restaurant is a must-visit. From the outside, one would never guess that it’s a restaurant. But what’s cooking on the inside is what makes it truly special!

I found El Chigre on a Sunday from a google search. And I am delighted that I did! I took a moto-uber to the restaurant and could not find it at first because I didn’t see any “traditional storefronts” or buildings that looked anything like a restaurant. And after a bit of confusion, I asked a local, “Donde esta el chigre?” and was escorted to a reddish/burgundy door with an older gentleman standing in front.

I approached the door, asked the gentleman if there was food, and was graciously escorted inside.
I didn’t know it then, but the gentleman at the door, Señor Abelardo, was the owner and chef of El Chigre, and a fantastic one at that!
Upon entering, I noticed a fresh octopus on display, and I looked over a menu full of different seafood options. And at that moment, I instantly felt like I had made the right choice to dine here.
Made to order, Señor Abelardo went to work preparing me fresh garlic shrimp and tostones. It was wonderful. From the ambiance to the music playing loudly outside of the restaurant, the entire experience was beautiful.

After a short wait and a cold Presidente beer, my food came to the table, served by Señor Abelardo.
The food was magnificent, to say the least. Well seasoned and full of flavor. The restaurant, the atmosphere, and the dining experience were all 10/10, and I highly recommend visiting. My only regret with this place is not finding it sooner and frequenting it more!
